Japanese Weekend Buffet @ Makishima, Sheraton Imperial Hotel

Back to Makishima for its newly launched weekend buffet. Earlier entries on Makishima's a la carte menu: June 1 & July 24.

The buffet is available Saturdays during dinnertime, 6pm-10pm; it's RM85++ per person, with a 50 percent discount for kids.

The selection is commendable for the price, so let's start the ball rolling with salads; no shortage of those here, spanning simmered hijiki seaweed, eggplant, sliced onions, potatoes, edamame & more.

Sashimi isn't an afterthought at Makishima; the buffet showcases not only the relatively ordinary offerings of salmon & tuna ...

... but also plenty of other intriguing options according to availability, prepared in multiple fashions & styles.

Freshness hits the necessary benchmark; we're fans particularly of the aburi-style preparation - partly roasted, partly raw & luscious, both parts complementing each other beautifully.

Surprisingly, the scene-stealing star of this selection is the sushi; it might seem scandalous to get stuffed on rice at a buffet, but Makishima's sushi is bountifully stuffed, beautifully topped & brilliantly tasty.

Again, several of the fish choices transcend the typical, making this ideal for the Japanese food fan who craves variety.

Part of the fun lies in the lack of a crowd for this buffet, since it's not been widely publicised. We were the sole diners for our session; so unlike most other Japanese buffets, there was no lining up whatsoever & battling other customers for choice cuts. But we're not sure how long the serenity will last.

Prefer your seafood cooked? From shishamo to squid to tempura prawns, that's certainly not a problem here.

Want your food cooked to order? Have the okonomiyaki or the teppanyaki beef & salmon.

Noodling around, we were also pleased to discover small, snack-sized bowls of both soba & udon.

And still much more from the Japanese cookbook, from chicken karaage to chawanmushi to clam-filled miso soup.

It all adds up to plate after plate piled up with pleasure, precisely what folks might seek from a Japanese buffet.

Desserts are the sole section that currently falls short; there are complimentary cotton candy & sliced fruits, but the restaurant is still looking into what else can be served for the sweet tooth.
